It Takes a Village to Raise a...VillageDuff Young is an ardent capitalist. Why shouldn’t he be—as a securities analyst and the founder and CEO of two successful companies, capitalism has sure done well by him. But when he visited the developing world, he realized that what worked for him isn’t doing the job in the rest of the world. Duff set out to prove that with the right approach, we can unlock the benefits of capitalism to even the world’s poorest people. He had no idea what he was getting into. The plan: to develop a plan for a universal low cost, sustainable town that puts capitalism to work in third world countries across the globe. Duff’s financial know-how helped him define his founding principles: an innovative mortgage and credit system that gives residents formal property ownership and rapid movement of capital; a business model that embraces specialization and competition and rewards enterprise; a strict code of aesthetics and behavior that instills a sense of pride and proprietership; adherence to the most environmentally sustainable practices. There’s just one problem: Duff Young has no clue how to build a town. Lucky for him, the market for philanthropy and social entrepreneurship is booming. Today there are thousands of people working in developing countries on innovative solutions for low cost architecture, energy, clean water, health care delivery—all the essential elements of a successful town. A million more people are thinking about these issues. Duff is tapping into this marketplace of ideas in a big way. To flesh out his plan, Duff and his team are meeting with experts across the globe, but they’re also soliciting ideas on an open-sourced wiki and a blog. So whether you’re working in the field in Calcutta or just getting distracted at your desk job, Duff wants your contribution. He’s confident that the free flow of ideas will lead to the best solutions. This isn’t just an abstract concept. As the idea takes shape, Duff will be building the first of these towns with his own capital in Liberia. With constant monitoring and feedback from this living experiment, you can see your ideas in action. The Duff Young Foundation is the world’s first open-sourced comprehensive development plan. What will it look like when it’s done? That’s up to you.
